The late 1970s and early 1980s were tumultuous for Harley-Davidson. Harley-Davidson had been under AMF’s ownership since 1969, but in 1981, the management team took the company independent. And after years of relying on the Shovelhead engine, which had its roots in the 1920s, Harley desperately needed an engine that could cope with modern noise reduction and emissions regulations.
