The customization of Harley Davidson Motorcycles is one of the fastest growing industries. In the old days, guys bought their Harleys and began chopping the fenders, bobbing the rear ends, adding S&S carbs, custom paint jobs, and also a great custom seat.

In those days most guys took the stock seat and removed the covers down to the seat pan and made their own customized seats. This is exactly where custom seat designer Danny Gray began as a young man.

The story of Danny Gray, and his famous Harley Davidson custom seats, is reminiscent of the true American dream and many a small business. Danny tells the story on his website of how one of his seats made the cover of a local bike builder`s magazine, in 1973. The now famous Arlen Ness noticed the article. Ness invited Danny Gray to his shop to view some of his seats. Danny goes on to say that Ness said, “I`ll take them all.” Gray`s custom seat business soared from that day forward. Some of Danny Gray`s customers include these bike builder icons: Arlen Ness, Dave Perewitz, and Don Hotop.

To some consumers, the seat they choose may be the last thing on their minds as they watch their dream bike come together; however, an ugly seat, or a seat that does not fit the over-all theme of the bike can be a disaster. Great seats are sort of like the final touch to a great tattoo—if the outlines are good but the coloring is off, the tattoo is ruined.

Often customers will choose a great theme for a bike: skulls, flames, bones, iron-crosses, etc., but they have to finish the job with a great seat to match the theme. If you`re in the market for a custom built bike, or you`re in the process of having one built or building one—check out Danny Gray seats, they really are unique.
